Day 3 of 8 Thames Path West - Ashton Keynes to Cricklade
Thursday, May 4
Today's walk was a short one, at least on paper. Yes, that's the Thames when it's barely a trickle!
The buildings in this section of the Cotswolds are made of Cotswold sandstone. They have a distinctive yellow color. The property walls are often topped with vertically placed slabs of the rock. Furthermore, the roofing tiles of most older homes are made of another stone cut into rectangular slabs about 1" thick. I can't imagine the weight of those roofs! (Photos will be inserted when I return to Sacramento, and can get the photos off my other cameras. Grrr.)
The native plants here are new to me. I discovered Stinging Nettle yesterday. Here are some of today's discoveries.
We quickly found our way to the Thames river. Once again, we encountered muddy walking.
We kept going. My companion, Carl, is not an experienced walker. He was tiring out. We slowed our paced and took breaks frequently. We brought along adequate water, but we had planned to have lunch when we reached Cricklade. So when Carl found a granola bar in his daysack, I made sure he ate it for energy. We continued on to Cricklade. We were a little over a mile from our inn when Carl realized he couldn't go any further. I saw a bus stop up ahead and coaxed him to get there, where he could sit down. I started researching taxis in the area. Then I had an aha moment, Uber! Yes, there are Ubers here and we found one. We reached our inn in Cricklade at least two hours later than I'd estimated. The kitchen at the White Hart Hotel was closed until 6 pm. I ran across the street to Tesco Express, and purchased two chicken sandwiches, some fresh fruit, and some yogurt. We ravenously ate them, and then rested.
I will supplement these photos when I get back to Sacramento and can read the SDcard in my Panasonic camera.
I'm impressed you had the energy to "RUN" across the street.
